Written by Roddy Lee

The barnyard at Tumbledown Creek Farm was abuzz with activity and the sun was high in the sky when Mr Horse woke up late again. That was normal.

"Hmm, better have my breakfast before it's the afternoon," he thought out loud, and that was normal too.

As Mr Horse walked over to his big bale of hay in the corner of the barn he thought of his day ahead, "A good feed then a bit of a lie down in the sun. Warm the old bones." This was quite normal..... for Mr Horse!

Mr Horse was chomping into his big bale of hay when suddenly a little head popped out.

This was not normal!!

"Hmmpf!" Mr Horse was quite aghast, "Who are you and what are you doing in my breakfast?" he asked the little critter.

"I'm Klaus, Klaus the house mouse. I live in the house. It's usually grouse!"

Klaus had a cute little face. He blinked his eyes brightly and was wearing a big smile that showed off his two big whiter than white front teeth. His ears were big and round with pointy tips, his long thin whiskers twitched all the time and his tiny button nose sniffed about as if the air was full of wonderful scents.

Mr Horse smiled down at funny little Klaus the house mouse, "That's all very well but what are you doing in my breakfast?"

Little Klaus became very serious as he told Mr Horse what had happened to him.

"I was chased out of the farm house, that's where I live, in the kitchen in the farm house..... I was chased out by a , by a, by a," Klaus stuttered. He couldn't say the words. He took a big breath, then let it out, "by the new cat!"

"The new cat!!?" scoffed Mr Horse.

"Yes," confirmed Klaus, "I was hiding from him, in your breakfast. That's why I'm here. It's nice to meet you, Mr Horse."

"Hmmpf, I don't like my breakfast disturbed," grumbled Mr Horse.

Mr Horse thought for a moment, "Well I guess Roddy The Rooster will want to hear of this. A new cat, hey? Come with me Klaus the house mouse. Come and tell your story to Roddy The Rooster."

As Mr Horse and Klaus the house mouse walked across the barnyard they saw Roddy The Rooster playing hide and seek with the Cheeky Chicks near the chicken coop.

"Hey, Roddy," Mr Horse bellowed across the yard, "Come and meet Klaus."

Roddy The Rooster and the Cheeky Chicks raced over to Mr Horse and Klaus. Roddy greeted Klaus like he was an old friend,"G'day, Klaus. How ya doin'?"

"Hello, Roddy," Klaus said brightly.

The Cheeky Chicks were introduced and said hello to Klaus the house mouse too.

Roddy The Rooster looked at little Klaus, "Now, what brings a house mouse out of the house, Klaus?"

"Don't ask!" Mr Horse replied, "I found him hiding in my breakfast!"

Roddy The Rooster looked at Mr Horse and scratched his head, "What are you talking about, Mr Horse?"

"The farmer and his wife have a new cat," Klaus butted in. "It chased me out of the house."

Then suddenly, in a split second, as if out of nowhere, a mottled cat jumped from the roof of the chicken coop and landed right in the middle of Roddy The Rooster and his friends, scattering everyone, everywhere, in every direction.

Mr Horse bucked and neighed as Roddy, The Cheeky Chicks and Klaus the house mouse ran for their lives.

The barnyard commotion caused the farmer to run from the house and he chased and he fought and, eventually, he caught the mottled cat but not before all the farmyard animals were part of the fracas and mayhem.

"What in darnation," cursed the farmer holding the mottled cat at arm's length in front of him, "A wild cat." He called to his wife inside the farm house, "It's a feral, Beryl!" Then he looked back at the mottled cat, "It all makes sense now. It was you who caused the mess in the kitchen this morning, wasn't it? "

Roddy The Rooster and his friends heard all the farmer said and they were sure that that mottled cat wouldn't be staying at Tumbledown Creek Farm.

Klaus the house mouse was so happy to be able to return back to the farm house. "It's grouse," Klaus the house mouse announced to all the gathered farmyard animals.

"Well, come out and see us anytime," said Roddy The Rooster.

Mr Horse was standing to one side, laughing to himself. Whenever Mr Horse thought of something funny to say he would laugh to himself before he said it. It was quite normal.... for Mr Horse!

"Yeah, sure," said Mr Horse to Klaus the house mouse, "but whenever you do, try and stay out of my breakfast!"
