Written by Roddy Lee

Roddy The Rooster and his friends, Cassie The Carpetsnake and Joe The Jolly Jumbuck, were walking through the beautiful Australian bush on a lovely Autumn morning when they heard a very faint cry for help.

"Help!" came the little voice, "Someone please help me!!"

Roddy and his friends raced over to where the cry was coming from and found a baby Magpie sitting amongst the colourful leaves beneath a tall tree.

"Please help me," said the baby Magpie, "I have fallen out of the nest above."

"Lucky you fell onto this soft bed of Autumn leaves," said Roddy.

The baby Magpie's mother was away - hunting for food - so Roddy and his friends had to work out how to return the cute little fellow to his nest because he was too small to fly.

Joe said, "I can't help. I have four legs and can't climb trees!"

Roddy said, "I'm not much help because I can't fly or climb trees either!"

Cassie said, "Then it's up to me!"

Roddy found the biggest leaf he could - a big red leaf - and told the baby Magpie to sit on the leaf. Roddy wrapped the big red leaf around the baby Magpie and carefully picked it up.

Cassie opened her mouth wide and Roddy placed the little wrapped Magpie in her mouth.

Up and up and up they went until they reached the nest in the fork at the top of the tree.

The baby Magpie thanked Cassie as she placed him carefully in the nest.

Cassie slid all the way back down the tree, and the baby Magpie leaned over the edge of the nest to yell out a big, big thank you to Roddy and Joe.

Roddy The Rooster told Cassie that she was the greatest tree climber he had seen and with Joe they continued on their walk waving goodbye to the baby Magpie.

"See you soon," called Roddy.
