Roddy The Rooster was cock-a-hoop!

"BWARK" he crowed, "Tis a new season - and it's time for our annual fete!"

Cassie The Carpetsnake was very excited - she loved the annual fete. Every year it was Cassie's job to run the Hoop-la stall. She'd lift the top half of her long silky body into the air so that it was stiff and encourage visitors to her stall to throw rings around her neck - and every ring that landed on her earned the contestant a prize. Sometimes Cassie would sway from side to side to make it even more difficult.

Joe The Jolly Jumbuck also greeted the news with much enthusiasm. Every visitor to the fete would call on Joe's Fairy Floss & Fairy Bread Emporium for sweet refreshments. Joe also served Home Made Lemonade, but it was Penny & Pixie Piglet who made the lemonade.

Roddy organised the Track & Field Events. With a starter's whistle hanging on a string around his neck and carrying a bag of props and prizes Roddy would "let 'em fly" in races such as the Egg & Spoon Race, The Backwards Run, The Three-Legged Cross Country Marathon and the highly original Niagara Falls - this is where the contestants lined up at the starting point with a paper cup full of water on their head. What a funny race - and a wet one too!

Joe had been champion of the Three-Legged Cross Country Marathon for three years in a row - all he had to do was tuck one leg up into his tummy and run around the windy track on the other three - Joe didn't even need a partner!

But this year it was to be different....

It was a beautiful golden morning when Roddy announced to all the gathered farm and bush animals that "The 1998 Tumbledown Creek Fete is declared open!!"

And fun was had by all - all day.

Penny & Pixie Piglet's lemonade was exceptionally tasty this year.

And Cassie The Carpetsnake was her usual cheeky self, swaying all over the place as Mr Horse came forward to play Hoop-la.

The track and field events ran smoothly throughout the afternoon until Roddy announced, "Now it's time for the Cross Country Three-Legged Marathon. Could all contestants please make their way to the starting line."

Penny & Pixie Piglet were first to arrive. Then Mrs Hen turned up with Desmond Duck as her running partner. The other contestants and spectators gathered in anticipation of the start but ... where's Joe?

Where's Joe The Jolly Jumbuck??

"This is his favourite event, " pointed out Mrs Cow, "He wouldn't miss it for all the hay in Hill End!!"

"And he is the defending champion, too!!" added Desmond Duck.

Roddy, too, was a little concerned and because the afternoon sun was getting low he called out loud, "Two minutes! Two minutes till racetime. Please tie up your socks and get on your marks!!"

But where's Joe?

.... TO BE CONTINUED NEXT MONTH
