Roddy The Rooster stood with a bright red loud hailer under his wing at the the starting line for the Cross Country Three-Legged Marathon. He lifted the bright red loud hailer to his mouth and announced, "Bwark!! Two minutes to starting time!!"

Penny and Pixie Piglet, Mrs Hen and Desmond Duck were on their marks and ready to race.

But where's Joe The Jolly Jumbuck, champion on this event for the last three years??

Roddy The Rooster lifted the bright red loud hailer to his lips again. "Joe The Jolly Jumbuck? Paging Joe The Jolly Jumbuck. Can you hear me, Joe!"

Suddenly Mrs Cow gave out a startled "Mooo!" Cassie The Carpetsnake slid through her legs and up to the starting line.

Cassie took a moment to catch her breath and then spoke, "Joe's down in the creek. I think he's fallen in!!"

"Bwark!!" Roddy jumped into action, "Come on everyone, down to Tumbledown Creek!"

Roddy The Rooster led the way, followed by all the animals, including Penny and Pixie Piglet and Mrs Hen and Desmond Duck with socks tied to their feet.

When all the animals arrived at the edge of Tumbledown Creek they found Joe The Jolly Jumbuck sitting in the middle of the creek, with his back to them, singing at the top of his voice.

"GING GANG GOOLI GOOLI GOOLI WASH WASH GING GANG GOO GING GANG GOO"

Roddy called out, "Hey Joe! What are you doing? Don't you know it's time for the Cross Country Three-Legged Marathon?"

Joe turned his head around, "Hello everyone! I knew someone would hear me - eventually!"

Roddy yelled again, "What's happened?"

Joe pointed to his submerged foot, "I got my foot stuck crossing the creek. It's sore, but I knew you'd come and rescue me - eventually."

Desmond Duck offered to help. He untied the sock from his and Mrs Hen's legs and paddled across to Joe.

Desmond's head vanished beneath the water and, before you could sing "Ayla Shayla", Joe's foot was freed.

"Hooray!!" chorused all the animals on the bank.

Joe limped across the creek holding his injured foot high, "It's sore, but I still have three good legs, I can still enter the race!"

All the animals followed Roddy The Rooster and the limping Joe The Jolly Jumbuck back to the starting line.

By the time they got there, Joe's foot was much better.

Roddy got onto the starter's box and through the bright red loud hailer he announced, "Get ready, get set, GO!"

The spectators gave a roar and the race got underway.

Ten minutes later Joe The Jolly Jumbuck appeared, hopping on three legs down the bush trail toward the finishing line.

In record time Joe won the race and the animals joined in cheering him and the other runners as they crossed the finish line.

At the celebration party Joe The Jolly Jumbuck gave free Fairy Floss and Fairy Bread to all his friends in thanks for rescuing him.

Roddy The Rooster made a speech and all the animals agreed that the 1998 Annual Tumbledown Creek Fete had been a great success. He thanked everyone for helping and then crowned Joe the Champion of the Cross Country Three-Legged Marathon.
