Written by Roddy Lee

Peck! peck! peck!

It was a bright sunny day and The Cheeky Chicks were in the farmyard sratching about in the dirt when they heard a faint muffled cry - "Help!"

It was coming from the direction of Mrs Cow's paddock.

On investigation The Cheeky Chicks discovered the cry for help was coming from a solitary flower bud that stood in the paddock atop of a long slender green stalk.

It was the bud of a wildflower - and the bud cried out again "Help!"

One little chick climbed onto the back of his brother putting his ear closer to the flower bud.

Suddenly it burst opened and revealed a tiny flower child - no bigger than themselves and much relieved to be free.

"Phew!" said the small girl stretching her arms, "That's a relief. It was so cramped in there!"

The Cheeky Chicks stood watching in amazement. Never had they seen a tiny little child in a flower.

The little girl introduced herself as Rhian the princess of all flower children. And the chicks told Princess Rhian that she was at Roddy The Rooster's farm.

"Oh," she said, quite shocked, "I'm not supposed to be here! I was sent by Mother Nature to the secret flower gardens on the western side of Tumbledown Creek."

"The secret flower gardens!" screamed the chicks, excitedly, "What are the secret flower gardens?"

Princess Rhian told the chicks all about the secret flower gardens where every beautiful colourful species of wildflower is sent by Mother Nature to grow in safety without fear of disturbance or destruction. "It's my job to check on the gardens once a year! But the recent winds of the change of seasons must have blown me off course."

As the Cheeky Chicks helped Princess Rhian to the ground they suggested that Roddy The Rooster may be able to help. So they all headed to Roddy's barn to seek his advice.

Roddy The Rooster was playing a game of cards with Cassie The Carpetsnake when the Cheeky Chicks arrived with Princess Rhian in the barn.

"We have a very special visitor,"said one of the chicks, "who needs your help."

So little Princess Rhian introduced herself to Roddy The Rooster and told him of her dilemma. She was surprised to hear that Roddy knew of the secret flower gardens. "Kira Kookaburra told me about them once," explained Roddy, "She flies over them regularly!"

Cassie The Carpetsnake spoke up, "I'll go and get Kira. It won't take me long." And Cassie slid out of the barn, across the yard and through the fence toward the eucalypt trees on the edge of Tumbledown Creek.

By the time she returned with Kira Kookaburra all the farmyard animals were in Roddy's barn listening to Princess Rhian's stories and adventures.

Cassie interrupted the gathered farm animals with the announcement of Kira's presence. Princess Rhian was so happy to see Kira and accepted her offer to fly piggyback to the secret flower gardens.

"One more story before you go!" wailed the Cheeky Chicks.

"Yes," agreed Desmond Duck, "Tell us the one about Mother Nature, when she fell in love, again!"

Princess Rhian couldn't say no, "Do you mind Kira if I tell them one more story?"

Kira wanted to hear it too so she settled down beside Cassie to find out what happened when Mother Nature fell in love.
"It was a long, long time ago,"
Princess Rhian said,
"When Mother Nature fell in love,
it went straight to her head.
T'was mighty Thor that she adored
From the moment that they met
In the forest of tranquility
near the hanging amulets

Thor was strong but gentle
And as they walked side by side
They talked of life in general
And how they felt inside
Hours passed but were not noticed
T'was a very special time
Day turned to night, then night to day
Their stories became entwined

What a meeting and in celebration
Thor gave the parched earth showers
And such was the magic Mother Nature
gave the earth the flowers"

With Princess Rhian's story complete Kira Kookaburra invited the flower child onto her back and with a big farewell from Roddy The Rooster and all his friends Kira flew off for the secret flower gardens with Princess Rhian on board waving goodbye.
