Written by Roddy Lee

Old Mr Wombat appeared outside his home that is on the bank beside Tumbledown Creek. He was carrying a pile of invitations. As he locked his front door he said to himself, "Yes, it's time I had all my farmyard friends over for a tea party!"

And with that he headed up the path under the eucalypts toward the farm.

"What a beautiful Monday morning," he smiled to himself.

Soon Old Mr Wombat was at Mrs Cow's paddock. "Mrs Cow!" he called.

Mrs Cow came over to Old Mr Wombat and was promptly handed one of the invitations. As she read it Old Mr Wombat spoke, "It's on Friday at noon."

Mrs Cow was greatful for the invitation but had to decline, because Friday, as she explained, was the day she and Joe The Jolly Jumbuck trained for the track and field events at The Annual Tumbledown Creek Fete. And as the fair was only a month away training was essential.

Old Mr Wombat was disappointed. Then Mrs Cow suggested that Thursday would be good for both her and Joe. Old Mr Wombat thought for a moment then agreed, "Okay," he said, "Let's make it Thursday. I haven't invited anyone else yet, so we'll make it Thursday..... at noon!"

"Have a nice day, Mrs Cow!" said Old Mr Wombat as he headed toward the farmyard. "Thanks for the invitation," said Mrs Cow who returned to eating her breakfast.

When Old Mr Wombat entered the barnyard he first saw Desmond Duck and promptly handed him an invitation. "It's on Thursday at noon," said Old Mr Wombat cheerfully.

"Oh," came Desmond's sad reply, "I have singing lessons on Thursday. I'm sorry Mr Wombat, but I can't make it on Thursday. Is Wednesday any good?"

Old Mr Wombat thought for a moment, "Well! Mrs Cow and Joe can make it on Thursday but I don't know about Wednesday."

His thoughts were interrupted when a familiar call rang out, "Hello, Mr Wombat!" It was Roddy The Rooster - and with him was Cassie The Carpetsnake. "What brings you to our barnyard on this fine Monday morning?" asked Roddy.

"Well," said Old Mr Wombat hestitantly, "I have these invitations to a tea party I'm having," and with that he handed invitations to Roddy and Cassie.

"When is it?" asked Roddy.

Before Old Mr Wombat could answer, the group were joined by Mrs Hen and her Cheeky Chicks, "What's going on here?" asked Mrs Hen. Roddy spoke up, "Apparently Old Mr Wombat is having a tea party - and we're all invited and I was just asking him when it is!"

Old Mr Wombat handed an invitation to Mrs Hen who then called Penny & Pixie Piglet over to join them.

Soon everyone had an invitation and Old Mr Wombat spoke, "You are all invited to a tea party at my place on Friday at.." Old Mr Wombat thought a moment, "No on Thursday at...no, wait a minute. Desmond couldn't make it on Thursday. On Wednesday at noon, if that suits."

Mrs Hen butted in, "Oh no, on Wednesdays we clean up the coup - together, as a team! How's Saturday?"

"Oh no, not on Saturday, not at noon," said Cassie, "that's my reading day. I could make it on Friday...or Thursday."

By now, the farmyard group had been joined by Joe The Jolly Jumbuck, Mr Horse and Mrs Cow!

Old Mr Wombat was distraught and dropped his head into his hands, "It seems that no day is any good."

Then, suddenly, Roddy The Rooster spoke up, "Mr Wombat, seeing we're all here now, why don't we have the tea party today!"

Old Mr Wombat took a moment to comprehend the idea, "Today? Well, I have the tea and I did bake some scones yesterday."

"And I have some lovely teacake. I could bring that!" offered Mrs Hen.

"Then it's settled!" said Roddy, "Thank you for the generous invitation Mr Wombat. We will all see you at noon!"

And all the farmyard animals cheered, "Hooray for Mr Wombat!"

So, with much relief and a smile on his face, Old Mr Wombat turned to leave Roddy The Rooster and his friends to prepare for the tea party, "See you at noon!"
