Written by Roddy Lee

"Quack, quack, quack. Quack, quack, quack!" came the sound of a contented duck!

It was Desmond Duck singing to himself as he waddled along the side of a dusty country road not too far from Tumbledown Creek Farm.

"I've been singing this tune all morning."

And a beautiful day it was.

So beautiful that Desmond Duck had left the farm at dawn for the long walk over the hill and across the railroad tracks and along the dusty country road to Sandy Ponds.

He was looking forward to a refreshing swim in the cool clear ponds.

Over the last small crest in the road, Desmond Duck waddled down the final slope to Sandy Ponds.

In he jumped!

"Yeeha! This is fabulous!" Desmond called as he swam around in circles and continued his singing, "Quack, quack, quack. Quack, quack, quack!"

Suddenly he stopped when he noticed a baby kangaroo drinking from the edge of the pond. Desmond Duck swam over to the baby kangaroo, "Hello?"

The baby kangaroo was very shy, so Desmond spoke quietly, "Where's your family, baby kangaroo?"

"I'm a joey," said the baby kangaroo, "Joey Joey. That's my name!" Joey Joey had a pretty little voice, and she blinked her long grey eyelashes a lot as she spoke.

"Well, where's your family, Joey Joey," asked Desmond again.

"I haven't got a family, I'm an orphan," said Joey Joey, "I've been staying with my uncle, Kenny Kangaroo."

Desmond Duck knew Kenny Kangaroo, as did all the animals at Tumbledown Creek Farm.

Joey Joey told Desmond Duck that she and her uncle were on their way to visit some of Uncle Kenny's friends - friends that Joey Joey had never met and Uncle Kenny had been very excited about her meeting, when Kenny Kangaroo bounded off ahead of her, leaving her hopelessly behind.

"Don't worry, Joey Joey," said Desmond, "I know Kenny Kangaroo's best friends, Kira Kookaburra and Uncle Tim The Koala. I'll take you. He's sure to be with one of them."

Desmond Duck waddled out of Sandy Ponds and shook the water from his feathers before he and Joey Joey headed back up the hill, "First we'll see if Uncle Kenny is at Kira Kookaburra's house."

It was late afternoon when Desmond Duck and Joey Joey came to the end of the dusty county road and crossed over the railroad tracks. "This is where the Little Red Caboose travels every day!" explained Desmond. "Would Uncle Kenny be visiting the Little Red Caboose?" asked Joey Joey.

"No, no, the Little Red Caboose would be tucked away in his garage this time of day." said Desmond, "It's not far to Kira Kookaburra's."

Over the fields and past the coolibah tree, eventually Desmond Duck and Joey Joey arrived at Kira Kookaburra's. But Kira was not there. "We'll try Uncle Tim The Koala. Kenny and Uncle Tim are best friends," Desmond Duck explained to Joey Joey.

"Quack, quack, quack. Quack, quack, quack." sang Desmond Duck as he and Joey Joey headed for Uncle Tim's treehouse. "That's a lovely tune, Desmond," commented Joey Joey, "But what are the words?" Desmond smiled to Joey Joey, "I'm still making them up. It's an original song.... by me," he added. Joey Joey sratched her head, "Maybe your song could be about Uncle Kenny and Kira Kookaburra and Uncle Tim The Koala!"

Down at Tumbledown Creek, under the eucalypts, Desmond Duck and Joey Joey strained their necks as they called up to Uncle Tim The Koala's treehouse. "Uncle Tim? Are you home??"

"Is Uncle Tim really your uncle like Uncle Kenny is my uncle?" asked Joey Joey. "No," laughed Desmond, "We just all call him uncle. Uncle Tim is everybody's uncle! And obviously he's not here!"

Joey Joey started to cry. Desmond Duck put his wing around Joey Joey, "Don't worry, we'll find your Uncle Kenny tomorrow. It's getting late. We'll go back to Tumbledown Creek Farm for the night, and tomorrow we'll work it all out."

But Joey Joey couldn't be consoled. She was really sad.

"Come on," said Desmond cheerfully, "Come and meet Roddy The Rooster and all our friends at the farm."

Joey Joey managed to smiled back to Desmond Duck. "Okay," she said, and they headed back to Tumbledown Creek Farm.

Desmond Duck and Joey Joey hadn't traveled far when out of the bushes came Cassie The Carpetsnake. She gave Joey Joey a fright! "Don't be alarmed," said Desmond Duck, "This is Cassie The Carpetsnake!"

Cassie looked sternly at Joey Joey, "Are you Joey Joey?"

"Y, y, yes, yes, I am!" Joey Joey stuttered back.

Cassie's mood changed to joy! "Oh joy, Joey Joey! Jolly good! Everyone has been so worried about you."

Cassie The Carpetsnake explained to Joey Joey and Desmond Duck that Kenny Kangaroo had arrived at Tumbledown Creek Farm earlier in the day thinking Joey Joey was bounding along behind him. "He had only discovered you missing after he had arrived at the farm. We've all been out all day looking for you!"

Cassie The Carpetsnake, Desmond Duck and Joey Joey arrived back at Tumbledown Creek Farm just on sunset and they were greeted with an enormous "Hooray!!" from all who had gathered, such was the relief.

Joey Joey was reunited with her ever grateful Uncle Kenny. "These were all my friends that I wanted you to meet," said Kenny. Kira Kookaburra was there. Joey Joey met Roddy The Rooster. And Uncle Tim The Koala adopted Joey Joey as another member of the mob. Joe The Jolly Jumbuck was glad to see that Desmond Duck was back too. Yes, everyone was there.

Desmond Duck was a bit of a hero. Roddy The Rooster and his friends agreed that Desmond deserved three cheers.

Hip Hip Hooray!

Hip Hip Hooray!!

Hip Hip Hoorayyyy!!!

Next morning Desmond Duck was saying goodbye to Joey Joey, "And I've finished my song," said Desmond, "It's about your Uncle Kenny and Uncle Tim and Kira, just like you suggested. I've called it KANG-KOALA-BUROO. It's a little bit of kangaroo, a little bit of koala and a little bit of kookaburra."

As Joey Joey bounded off with her Uncle Kenny she could hear Desmond Duck singing his song, and she smiled, "It's great to have good friends!"
